Connect a Printer with Ethernet: Port and IP Checks

An Ethernet printer connects its own RJ45 LAN port to a router or switch. Confirm the port exists on the exact model before trying this route.

Direct network printer or PC share?

An Ethernet-connected printer receives its own network address. A USB printer shared from a Windows PC depends on that host PC staying on. These are different setups.

Set up the direct connection

  1. Check the model's official Ethernet specification and locate its RJ45 port.
  2. Connect the cable to a trusted router or switch, then power on the printer.
  3. Print a network report or view network settings to find its assigned IP address.
  4. In Windows, use Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device.
  5. If discovery fails, use the device's actual address in the manual TCP/IP flow and print a test page.

When the IP responds but printing fails

Check queue status, an old port pointing at a changed DHCP address, the correct model driver, and office print policies. A failed ping alone does not prove a printer is offline.
